Departmental Report
The College of Science is known for its unique academic research and its diversified teaching and services. Our goals in recent years include:
1) Integrate and establish research groups with specialties
2) Promote broad and diversified education
In addition, the College of Science hopes to maintain adequate growth in its pursuit of research grants, promotion of teaching and services, and strengthening of administrative efficiency.
1. Promote broad and diversified education
1) Continue to promote the National Science Council’s “Guidance Program for Outstanding High School Student in Laboratory Experiments.” Currently three programs for high school students are being conducted by the departments of chemistry, applied mathematics, and biological sciences.
2) Continue to work with the Ministry of Education to promote counseling centers for basic science. Our outstanding faculty and facilities provide the best counseling services to high school teachers and students.
3) Our “Basic Chemistry Education Improvement Program” has already been approved by the Ministry of Education. This is part of the MOE’s “Project of Excellence for University Core Education Advancement.” This program integrates the chemistry departments from National Sun Yat-sen University, National Chung Hsing University, National Chung Cheng University, I-Shou University, and National Kaohsiung Normal University. The computerized teaching materials related to laboratory chemistry are used.
4) The inter-college/inter-departmental integration of nano science curriculum. This project is led by the College of Science to integrate faculty from the departments of physics and chemistry with faculty from the institutes of materials science and optoelectronics who are interested in the study of nano science. A proposal has been submitted to the National Science Council to establish “Integrated Teaching Program for Nano Technology and Materials.” It has been approved as a three-year integrated project.
2. Strengthen competitive mechanisms in academic research
1) Work with the Department of Chemistry to obtain high-valued instruments such as the 500 MHz NMR (NT$12M from the National Science Council; NT$6M from NSYSU, for a total of NT$18M)
2) Establishment of the Nano Technology Precision Instrument Laboratory. In order to elevate the efficiency of nano technology research, NSYSU has already committed NT$15M to purchase three high-valued instruments: the Raman Spectrometer, FTIR, and the XRD. The College of Science will provide a 130 m2 space to house the new “Nano Technology Precision Instrument Laboratory.” Currently all three instruments have been installed. Soon their usage will be provided to faculty members who share the same research interest. in the hopes of providing beneficial assistance.
